How to Get Your Export
In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. In Claude, open Settings, then Privacy, then Export data. You receive a zip by email. Menu names may change over time. Upload the zip here, or unzip it and upload conversations.json.
Questions
Is my chat history uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser and never leaves your device. Exports can be large, so a very big file may take a few seconds.
Which format keeps my messages best?
Markdown keeps formatting and code blocks. Word opens in Word and Google Docs. For PDF, use Print and choose Save as PDF.
Why only the current branch of a ChatGPT chat?
ChatGPT stores edited and regenerated replies as branches. This tool exports the branch you last saw, so the conversation reads in order.
